Custom Closets & Garage Cabinets in Mesa, AZ

Free In-Home Design Consultation: (602) 298-6956

Space Solutions is a family-owned Arizona company that designs, builds, and installs custom storage for homes across the City of Mesa. Not a franchise. Not a national brand with a showroom lease and a warranty line that rings in another state. The company opened in Phoenix in 1991, and the same family that started it is still the one running it.

Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona, behind only Phoenix and Tucson, and at roughly 139 square miles it is big enough to hold three different housing stories at the same time. Central and west Mesa are the original townsite and the first post-war subdivisions: 1950s to 1970s ranch homes with block construction, small original closets, and a carport or single-car garage. East Mesa is the 1970s through the 1990s, the decades when most of the city went up, along with the 55+ communities that make Mesa unlike anywhere else in the East Valley. Southeast Mesa is the 2000s and newer, Eastmark and the homes near Gateway, still selling. So the first question our designer asks is not “walk-in or reach-in?” It is “which era is your house?”

Noah and Jennifer Peery built the company on a simple idea: Arizona homeowners deserve storage made for Arizona homes, not flat-pack furniture trucked in from two time zones away. Mesa has always built things to last. The First Mesa Company cleared the ancient Hohokam canals in 1878 and had water flowing by April of that year, five years before the city incorporated. Over 45,000 homes to date, an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license, ROC# 248245.

Every project gets designed at your kitchen table, built in our own Phoenix shop, and put in by a crew on our payroll. Nobody in the middle, and no subcontractor showing up in an unmarked van to do the install. The designer who measures your Mesa home presents your 3D rendering and stays through install day.

Custom Closets Designed for Mesa Homes

Here is the number that explains most of the closets we see in Mesa. The 1980s was the city’s peak build decade, a little over 51,000 homes from those ten years alone, and six in ten Mesa homes went up between 1970 and 1999. The median Mesa house was built in 1989. That house has usually been kept up. New roof, new kitchen, tile where the carpet used to be. And the primary closet is still a single rod and a single shelf, sized for a 1989 wardrobe, because it is the one thing nobody replaces until it finally gives out.

A custom closet starts from the opposite direction. We count the clothes and shoes you really have, then design to that inventory. Double-hang for shirts and pants, long-hang for dresses and coats, drawer banks for what should not live on a hanger, shoe storage that is not a pile on the floor. Without moving a single wall, a typical rebuild ends up with about twice the usable hanging space. In a 1980s reach-in that was never pushed past the builder’s layout, sometimes more.

Then there are the other two Mesas. In the historic districts around Downtown Mesa, bungalows built between the 1880s and the 1940s have closets from the armoire era, sometimes a shallow niche with a rod and nothing else, and the closet problem is really a square-footage problem. Out in Las Sendas, Red Mountain Ranch, and the gated custom section of Alta Mesa, the primary suite often has a dressing-room footprint already and needs a finish level to match the rest of the house. And in the 55+ communities of east Mesa, Dreamland Villa, Leisure World, and Sunland Village, a closet has a job no closet elsewhere in the East Valley has: it holds half a wardrobe for a homeowner whose other half lives somewhere with a snow shovel. A dedicated Mesa custom closets page is on the way.

Luxury Closet Features

In the Las Sendas and Red Mountain Ranch tier, a closet becomes a dressing room. A center island with jewelry drawers below and a quartz top that works as a packing surface. Glass-front cases, lighted rods, valet hooks, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry in a finish that matches the millwork in the rest of the suite. In a 1990s golf-community primary, the footprint is usually there. What is missing is the build.

Closet Accessories & Lighting

Accessories are where a custom closet earns its keep. Soft-close drawers, adjustable shelving, pull-out pant and tie racks, and pull-down rods where reach is a consideration, which in a single-level Leisure World home is most of the time. LED rod lighting matters more than people expect in a closet with no window. You should be able to tell navy from black at six in the morning without carrying a shirt to the bathroom.

Walk-In Closets & Reach-In Closets

Whether it is a walk-in or a reach-in, the job does not change: every inch the room offers has to earn its keep. Mesa’s post-2000 homes in Eastmark and the southeast usually have the walk-in footprint and filled it with builder wire shelving, which sags under a winter coat and prints a grid on every folded sweater. A rebuild there is simple enough: zones for each kind of clothing, double-hang runs, drawer towers, and shelves cut to fit what actually sits on them. In the 1970s and 1980s stock, the primary is often a long reach-in behind sliding mirrored doors, and it can be pushed much further than the owner expects.

Reach-in closets are the workhorses nobody thinks about. Secondary bedrooms, kids’ rooms, nearly every 1959 block home in Dreamland Villa, every bungalow in the Evergreen district. The builder version is always the same: one rod, one shelf, bifold or sliding doors, 24 inches of depth the wardrobe never quite uses. Our rework adds double-hang, shelves that adjust, cubbies for shoes, and a bank of drawers so nothing has to live on the floor. For a downsizer who just moved a four-bedroom northern house into a 1,400 square foot single-level, that reach-in has to do real work.

Garage Cabinets & Garage Storage Systems

Mesa garages depend on the era more than any other room in the house. Pre-1970 central Mesa often means a carport or a single-car garage, where storage has to go up the walls because there is no floor to give. The 1980s and 1990s two-car garage in Dobson Ranch or Superstition Springs is bare drywall and bare concrete, and after 35 years it holds three decades of bins. Eastmark delivers a three-car garage the same way, just newer. In every case a custom garage system turns it into closed cabinets, a workbench, overhead racks, and wall storage that keeps the floor clear enough to park in.

Then there is the garage no other city has to think about: the seasonal one. An east Mesa home that closes up from June to October stores a second vehicle, a golf cart, the patio furniture, and everything that cannot sit in the heat, and nobody is home to wipe off the monsoon dust. An uninsulated East Valley garage runs 10 to 18 degrees hotter than outside, which on a 105-degree July afternoon puts the interior well over 120 degrees. Off-the-shelf cabinets do not survive that cycle: they warp, the shelves sag, and the laminate starts letting go. Particleboard fails. We build for Arizona: powder-coated steel, aluminum framing, closed doors, finishes rated for the environment. A dedicated Mesa garage cabinets page is coming.

Aluminum vs. Wood Garage Cabinets

Both have a place. Powder-coated aluminum and steel shrug off heat and dust, the safe call for a working garage, a lock-and-leave seasonal home, or a Lehi acreage garage that doubles as a barn and a workshop. Wood and high-grade laminate read warmer and suit a finished garage gym or a showroom bay in a Red Mountain Ranch or Las Sendas home where the garage is treated as part of the house.

Slatwall & Overhead Racks

Floor space is precious when the garage also holds two cars and a golf cart. Slatwall converts a blank wall into movable hooks and brackets for bikes, ladders, and hand tools, with nothing left on the concrete. Overhead racks claim the dead space near the ceiling, the right spot for patio cushions and holiday bins in a home that sits empty all summer. Closed cabinets matter here more than most places. Haboob season pushes fine dust into every garage in the Valley, and the far east side toward the Superstitions takes more of it than most.

Garage Floor Coatings for Arizona Heat

A coated garage floor finishes the room. Oil, brake dust, and monsoon grime stay on the surface instead of soaking in, cleanup takes a few seconds, and the garage reads as another room rather than a concrete pad with a door on it. Most Mesa homes came with bare gray concrete regardless of the decade, and a 1985 slab in Alta Mesa has had 40 years to collect stains.

Product choice matters more here than almost anywhere because of heat and UV. Cheap epoxy yellows, peels, and lifts under hot-tire pickup when a car pulls in off a 105-degree road and parks while the tires are still scorching. The swing between a July daily high and a December daily high is about 60 degrees, and a coating that cannot handle that cycle fails in its second summer. For a seasonal home, the smart move is to coat before you close up in spring, so oil and dust do not set in unattended. A dedicated Mesa garage floor coatings page follows shortly.

Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic Coatings

The big-box kits are almost all epoxy, the lower-cost choice, and in a garage with air conditioning that works well enough. In a Mesa garage that swings well over 120 degrees and takes hot-tire pickup all summer, it tends to yellow and peel. Polyaspartic costs more up front and earns it back with faster cure, better UV stability, and a finish that still looks right when you come back in October.

Workbench & Tool Storage

If the garage is going to be a workshop, it needs a proper bench and a home for each tool. Our workbenches get a solid top that holds up to the heat, a bank of drawers underneath, and slatwall or pegboard on the wall above. This comes up constantly in the 55+ communities, where retirement means the garage finally becomes the woodshop, and in Lehi, where an acre lot comes with real equipment and real dirt.

Home Offices, Pantries & Whole-Home Storage

Roughly one in six to one in eight Mesa workers does some or all of the job from home, and the households behind that number are not the ones a national chain designs for. Boeing assembles the Apache helicopter at its plant beside Falcon Field and employs roughly 4,600 to 5,000 people there. Banner Health is the city’s second largest employer, and Banner Desert Medical Center is the largest hospital in the East Valley. ASU Polytechnic sits on 600 acres in southeast Mesa, and the Elliot Road Technology Corridor is drawing engineering and operations households to Eastmark. Program managers on a hybrid schedule, clinicians charting at night, faculty, network engineers. None of them should be working off a laptop on the kitchen island. A built-in Mesa home office gives them a proper desk, dual-monitor depth, and cable management.

Pantries are the other constant request. A 1950s or 1960s central Mesa kitchen frequently has no pantry at all, and the 1980s galley pantry never matched how families shop now. The rest of the house gets the same treatment: laundry rooms rebuilt as working rooms rather than closets with a washer in them, entertainment centers and full media walls, Murphy beds, mudrooms, craft rooms, and kitchen organization. Whole-home storage, not a single-service menu.

Built-In Desks & Shelving

A desk from a rental catalog wedged into the guest room corner is not an office. A built-in is. The desk gets cut to the exact wall, the cables route through the cabinetry where you never see them, and file drawers take the paper off the top. In an Eastmark spare bedroom that means replacing builder wire shelving with a real workstation. In a 1980s east Mesa den that was never wired for two monitors, it means solving the power and the depth at the same time.

Pantry Pull-Outs

What separates a pantry from a pantry that works is whether you can reach what is in it. A pull-out shelf slides the back row of a deep cabinet out to your hands, and the cans quit vanishing behind the cereal boxes. In an older Mesa kitchen where the pantry is one narrow cabinet, pull-outs recover storage that has technically been there for 40 years. Mesa’s dry air outside monsoon season is close to ideal for bulk dry goods. Sealed doors handle the two months when it is not.

Entertainment Centers

The 1980s and 1990s great rooms in Dobson Ranch, Alta Mesa, and Superstition Springs were laid out around a console television. Today they hold a mounted flat panel with a nest of visible cables under it. Built-in cabinetry tucks the equipment away and gives the screen a frame. In Eastmark the problem runs the other way: a builder niche sized for no television currently sold.

Murphy Beds

Mesa has a Murphy bed case no other East Valley city has, and the 55+ communities are why. In Leisure World, Sunland Village, and Dreamland Villa, the second bedroom has to be a guest room when the grandkids visit in February and an office or sewing room the other eleven months. Downtown bungalows have the same problem for a different reason: no room can afford to be single-purpose.

Mudroom & Entryway Storage

The door from the garage into the house is the chokepoint where dust, backpacks, and shoes pile up, and six in ten Mesa homes were built before the mudroom was a floor plan feature. Closed lockers, a bench, and a row of hooks at that door stop monsoon grit before it reaches the carpet. In Las Sendas it becomes a gear locker for Usery Mountain trail days. In a 55+ single-level it gets designed as a seated, reachable transition zone rather than a wall of hooks at shoulder height.

Why Mesa Homeowners Choose Space Solutions

What sets us apart is that we are local, and we mean that in a concrete way. Jennifer Peery runs operations. Noah Peery runs the shop. When you call with a question, a real person at a real Arizona address picks up, not a call center that forwards you to the nearest franchisee. If the crew has to adjust because a 1979 block wall is not as square as the blueprint claimed, the designer makes that call on the spot.

Local also means we price for the Mesa we actually see. Mesa is a middle-income city with some high-end pockets, not a luxury market, and the volume customer here owns a 35 to 45 year old house with real equity and dated original storage. We write those quotes to value and durability. The dressing-room voice is reserved for the homes that want it. Local also means knowing the spec problem: a Mesa garage in summer runs well over 120 degrees inside, the lake-adjacent homes in Dobson Ranch add humidity on top of the heat, and a seasonal home sees all of it with nobody there to open a window.

And local means accountability measured in years. Bought a closet when you moved into your Red Mountain Ranch house and now want the garage done too? Your original drawings are still in our files, the crew is the same, the standards have not changed, and the finish will match. For seasonal residents it also means scheduling that respects the calendar: measure in spring before you leave and install in the fall before you arrive, or the other way around. That is what a lifetime installation warranty means in practice, and it is why a family-owned Arizona company stays family-owned for more than 30 years.
