Workstation Designs
The workstation is the room. For sewing, we build machine surfaces at 30 inches and cutting or assembly surfaces at 36 inches. Machine drop-ins recess the bed flush with the tabletop so fabric feeds flat instead of dragging over a lip. Extension wings give you 6 feet of continuous support for quilt tops. For painting, tilt-top surfaces at easel height. For scrapbooking, a 30-inch table with a stain-resistant laminate top that shrugs off glue and paint.
For the electronics and model side, the specs shift. A deeper bench, usually 30 inches front to back, so a soldering station, a mat, and a magnifier all sit down without crowding. Power at bench height rather than at the baseboard. Small-parts drawer banks directly under the work zone. One honest limit: we plan the bench so an anti-static mat and grounding strap have somewhere to live, but the cabinetry itself is not a certified static-dissipative workstation. We also do not run new circuits or ventilation. That is an electrician’s job.
In a converted Chandler bedroom from the 1980s or 1990s, the existing outlets sit at baseboard height, right behind where the cabinetry is going. Counter-height power is the difference between a working studio and a permanent extension cord.
